“Food brings people together and beautiful ceramics bring food together!”
Here’s a tale of lovingly handcrafted pottery for everyday use, where the little flaws and imperfections make each piece a unique addition to your space!
Showcasing a minimal, rustic, earthy aesthetic with muted, and neutral tones, most of the wares are wheel-thrown and distorted. In 2016, the name ‘A Clay Story’ was coined as one of the many stories of clay. The plan was to share the journey of the craft so that people could understand the value of handcrafted crafts. “There are many stories that people tell through clay. But the physicality of the artform is often not realized and the effort that goes behind it!”
Originally from Bhopal, Anumita did her graduation in Product Design from NIFT, Delhi. Being a crafty child and working with vivid materials in college, she discovered a love for making things with her hands. In her final year of college, she interned with Dileep Industries, where she was acquainted with ceramics for the first time. Taking this new-found love forward, she signed up for a weekend course at Delhi Blue Pottery and then went to Andretta for their residency program. After that, she joined as a Head Designer at Ferrolinkers, an export house designing and manufacturing metal furniture and home decor. Pottery was something she used to indulge in on the weekends or at night, bettering her skills. She had also co-founded Studio SQ1 in 2017. 2019 is when she took a leap of fate and quit her job to pursue pottery full-time. She dabbled with a few pop-ups and finally built her own studio one piece at a time in 2020.
“Wheel-throwing is my favorite part of the day, it centers and grounds me!” She plays with hues and textures (keeping variety) but the focus remains on functionality especially when it comes to tableware. The shape, size, or hold of the tableware created is defined by its usage and what you serve. Anumita’s creative process is more intuitive and she prefers the organic way of creating something, letting the process flow. A vague idea goes through tweaks, molds, and in-house glazing to reach your table as a finished artisanal piece. The inspiration behind it all is family gatherings as her core memory, where she remembers her loved ones coming together to share food, conversations, and laughter!
